Toward the end of last month, we had the opportunity to partner with the Oregon University System’s GEAR UP program to facilitate workshops and pep rallies at 5 rural community schools in Oregon. From March 18 - 22, we hit the road and had our lives changed by some truly incredible students.

“Berea, Leslie, Powell, Rockcastle, Bell, Pulaski, Jackson, Clay, Knott, Estill, Lee, Breathitt, Perry, Owsley, Jackson Independent, Madison, Knox, Laurel! Class of 2017 - make some NOOOIIIIIIISSSSSSEEEEE!”
Imagine watching 5,000+ students from 18 Kentucky counties do the wave on command like they’d practiced it a million times before. Last Wednesday, August 29 at the Corbin Arena in Corbin, KY, this was our view. Facing the biggest audience we’d ever performed for, it was only fair that we matched the energy that the budding scholars gave us. We were honored to be a part of the event kicking off the Berea College CFES Scholars Program and we had a blast doing it! From the minute we arrived in Kentucky, we felt right at home.
After sharing the stage with country singer-songwriter, Chad Warrix, we joined the students on the arena floor for an impromptu dance party (set off by our very own DJ Kraff). As we danced, we eagerly posed for pictures, signed t-shirts and overhead conversations about how much fun students had, how inspired they were and how much they were looking forward to living out their dreams. The best part about it is - that inspiration and enthusiasm will be met with ample allies and resources. With the support of Berea College and their GEAR UP grant, thousands of students across Kentucky will have opportunities to shine and soar as they move onto to high school and beyond.
This trip was the perfect start to our fall 2012 tour. We’ll be unveiling the full schedule soon. In the meantime, check out the photos from our Kentucky trip here: http://on.fb.me/Tf3kFL
About two months ago, we were presented with an incredible opportunity to travel to Kentucky for a GEAR UP kick-off event to get a crowd of 5000+ 8th graders excited about their future and the benefits of higher learning. As they take on a new school year, these students are also stepping into a new role as College For Every Student (CFES) Scholars. Needless to say, we accepted the invitation.
On Wednesday, we’ll join country singer Chad Warrix and meet face-to-face with students from over 19 Kentucky school districts to rock Corbin Arena, Hall Pass Tour style. Tonight, we hit the road for Kentucky with j.RENEÈ, ScienZe, DJ Kraff, Holley with an E., Kam and Aaron (6/8 of the team). And guess what? You’re coming along for the ride!
Be on the lookout for photos (yup, we’re officially on Instagram) and videos from the trip courtesy of Kam and Aaron. We can’t wait to share this experience with you. Thanks so much for all your support!
